Description
Spatterdock (Nuphar advena)
Spatterdock (Nuphar advena) is a relative of the water lily. It is a deep water plant and has bright yellow 2.5-5cm (1-2in) flowers around the size of golf ball held above the large, green, waxy leaves which open in the daytime and close at night. This is a large plant whose leaves are often floating, however some leaves remain submerged below the water. Suitable for planting in large ponds, lakes or wetland projects. This can be a useful habitat plant for fish and wildlife providing food, shelter, and a place of breeding. The leaves provide shade, shelter, and cover from predators for many invertebrates that fish use for food and the seeds are eaten by water fowl and other birds.
- Spatterdock commonly occurs in ponds, lakes and sluggish streams and blooms from spring to summer.
- Flowers June to August.
- Grow in still or slowly moving water.
- Position full sun or partial shade.
- Individual plants reach 150cm (60in) across when mature.
- Planting depth 90-300cm (36-120in).
- These are quite large plants and we recommend planting in a mesh basket of at least 22cm.
- We ship all water plants bare root, this means that we wash the soil off before packing plants. During the summer months we may need to trim some of the foliage back for shipping.
