Deschampsia cespitosa – Tufted Hair-grass
Deschampsia cespitosa ( Tufted Hair-grass ) is also known as tussock grass. It is a perennial clump forming semi evergreen member of the grass family. It has narrow leathery dark green leaves which grow up to 60cm long. The seed heads form on stems which rise 80cm in height and are shades of green/purple sometimes appearing silver. This plant will add architectural structure and height to your garden. It is suitable for growing in beds and boarders, meadow gardens and wildlife gardens. It provides all year-round cover for animals.
- Height 4.5 ft (1.4 m) tall when mature
- Spread 0.5m to 1m
- Flowers from June until August.
- Plant in well-drained to moist soil
- Position in full sun to partial shade
- Easy to maintain.
- Cut back after flowering.
- Will self seed, cut seed heads off after flowering if you wish.
